"People who don't know much about art will often say, 'Oh how pretty.'
"Beauty goes beyond pretty... it moves into the soul of a painter and brings out knowledge they didn't know was there."

Jackie Brooks, award-winning artist, lecturer, teacher and a signature member of six watercolor societies, was born in South Dakota and grew up in Longview, Washington. She and her older sister, Virginia, and younger brother, David, leaned toward the arts. Virginia is a cellist and quilter and David a sculptor and ceramist. "Though neither of my parents were musicians nor artists," Jackie says, "my mother spent all of a small inheritance on the purchase of a cello and a violin. My father on the other hand was somewhat passive about our preoccupation with art and music."Jackie credits two important people as her mentors in her younger years: Her aunt who purchased her first brushes and paints and spent many quality hours painting with her and the other was an art teacher who taught only one year at her high school. "I doubt she'd remember me," says Jackie, "but my hope is to locate and thank her for the special priviledge she provided me. The impact of that experience changed my life."Years later, after painting on her own for many years and developing her own style, Jackie had the opportunity to study with many fine artists who came to Seattle to teach and/or hold workshops. "They taught me" she says, "new ideas that I then incorporated into my style. In fact, artist Don Andrews opened up my imagination with his unusual use of color and design."Jackie's initial education was in music where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Seattle Pacific College. She then studied life drawing at the New School of Visual Concepts and went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts in art from Seattle Pacific University. Her art career garnered recognition early on with her first exhibition in 1976. Then, in 1987, Jackie received her first award, the "People's Choice Award". Also in l987, she and four other artists began life models sessions at Jackie's studio twice a week. One group met on Monday evenings and another session was on Wednesday mornings. For almost seven years they continued painting life models together and enjoyed their companionship. In 1988, Jackie had a critically acclaimed exhibition in Nicosia, Cyprus sponsored by the American Embassy. In September 1996, she had a solo exhibition in Falmouth, Cornwall, in the UK. During the summer of 1999 one of her paintings was part of a group exhibition by women painters in Ireland. In addition to holding degrees in music and art, Jackie has created posters, concert programs and paintings for musical groups. She continues to teach watercolor classes and has for nineteen years, gives lectures, holds workshops, has classes at private clubs and teaches art courses at colleges and universities throughout the Seattle area. Jackie's work has been included in over eighty national and international competitions with more than half winning awards and her name and/or artwork has been published in a number of well-respected books and magazines for both art instruction and biographical purposes. She has been published in four books, five magazines and two book covers. Most recently her work appears on the front cover of the CD, "A Most Notorious Woman", music of Irish fiddler and composer, Martin Stillian. Her latest magazine publications are in the October 2002 Watercolor Magic; included in the article on Creativity by Cathy Woo. Also in Watercolor Magic August 2003 article on Art and Healing by Maureen Bloomfield. Then again in the January 2003 issues of The Artist's Magazine "Shape Shifting" by Jackie Brooks. She has a painting on the book cover "Queen Anne Community on the Hill" published by Queen Anne Historical Society, and a painting on magazine cover of "The Horn Call" published by International Horn Society. Jackie loves the Northwest. She still resides, teaches, paints and exhibits her extraordinary work in the Seattle area of Washington state. She has studied privately with many national, regional and local instructors, and through experimentation and taking risks, she continues to push the limits to identify and expand her body of work.
