"My tiny mixed media pieces continue the collage tradition of commenting on human society; more specifically, human folly.
"The passing years developed my comic spirit and the non-traditional materials allow me to work with serious subjects in playful ways."

Alyce Ritti was born in 1934 in Moline, Illinois. She was raised and educated in the midwestern part of the United States and has experienced marriage, raising a family and earning a Ph.D. in the northeastern portion of the United States.
Her formal art study in drawing and painting began at the Quad-City Museum of Art in Davenport, Iowa, was interrupted, and resumed "years" later at the School of Visual Arts at Pennsylvania State University.
Now, living on a mountain ridge in central Pennsylvania, she again makes art; this time contemporary collages and enjoys a 'second life' as a successful International artist.

Asked about her unique work, Alyce tells us...
"My tiny mixed media pieces continue the collage tradition of commenting on human society; more specifically, human folly. The passing years developed my comic spirit and the non-traditional materials allow me to work with serious subjects in playful ways.
"Such material include 'cut outs' from various sources and various times, 'found' objects, fabric, paper, paint and, of course, 'glue'. These create active surfaces that attract attention and please the eye. The surreal figurative scenes are sometimes satirical and sometimes sympathetic. All are good to look at in order to draw you into the underlying themes.
"Sometimes the edges are ragged; slips of the hand show. This adds to the liveliness of the images because in my work concept, process and result are inseparable."

"CUTTING COMMENTS"by art critic Mary ThomasCollage is a form of expression that matches our material-laden culture so well that it's become rather commonplace. While much of what is done hovers dangerously close to scrapbook, occasionally an artist makes it his or her own to good advantage.
Such is the case with Port Matilda, Pennsylvania, artist Alyce Ritti, who in her exhibition, "Cutting Comments", at Studio Z Gallery on the South Side, soft peddles social commentary within works that inspire a chuckle and have the quality of hand work.
An example is the piece she's chosen for her announcement, "Sloth II", in which a plucked, roasted turkey, sporting a straw hat and human feet, lies in a hammock. Clocks, a sundial and a small, metal resting pig complete the lace and yarn framed composition. She's at her best with these small works, which address what Ritti calls "human folly". Art historical images that appear out of context also add to the fun. And, she can get ribald, as in "Pride I", now in the collection of the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art, Loretto, Pennsylvania, a copy of which is in the show.
The temptation of all of that consumer society raw material can lead to heavy-handed application and tends to make the "Now/Then" compositions too busy, whereas, paradoxically, the very largest works seem a bit spare.
But this is all a matter of fine tuning, and some of her experiments, such as "Goddess I" in a shadowbox, hit it just right.
...from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette_______________________________________________ Alyce's collages have traveled to Belgium; China; Central Europe; Paris, France; Stockholm, Sweden; Venice, Italy as well as California; Chicago, Illinois; Kansas; New Mexico; New York; North Carolina; Washington, DC; Pittsburgh, Loretto and Central Pennsylvania in the United States. Alyce has received grants and awards for her work, and her collages are collected throughout the United States and Europe. Her work was included in the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art Triennials VI and VII in Loretto, Pennsylvania and in 2000 they purchased her collage "Pride" for their permanent collection. Ms. Ritti enjoys writing about the arts for various magazines and tells us she ocassionally teaches an art class. One of her collages, "Gluttony", is included in the 2001 date book, "Her Mark", published by Woman Made Gallery in Chicago, Illinois. Comments from admirers and collectors..."Each work was like a novella, bearing infinite readings, resonating, not infinite interpretations, you are to articulate for that though there are many moments of mystery. I love the experience of tender perceptions, in the context of satire." - Linda"Loved your work: it's really crazy. But I don't think I would like YOU as a person." - Frank"Food for the soul...Your work seems to exist in a way that is at one time both simple and complex....Each piece seemed to engage me and had a quality that could fill the room as though I stepped inside it...(Still,) you are an earthy personable woman. Family seems so important to you. You have shared so much. Thank you." - Renee"I love your work. It is witty, intelligent and beautiful. They are each precious gifts to the world." - AdrienneCURRENT AND UPCOMING EVENTS:More coming soon!
