"Although my paintings are realistically rendered, they are all works of fiction that do not quite tell a story but imply one and invite the viewer to supply the plot. There are wonderful paintings full of drama and event; and there are paintings that rest on the wall revealing themselves; slowly and quietly drawing their audience in. I am interested in making the latter."
_______________________________________________ Marjorie tells us more... "Growing up in Washington, D.C. was a rich experience, a virtual banquet of visually exciting images, awash in museums, monuments, and classical architecture, and I recall rows of dusty cases in the old Smithsonian Castle filled with samples of all that is remarkable in the natural world and rendered by the hand of man. All this and the National Portrait Gallery, the Corcoran Gallery, Renwick, the magnificent National Gallery, and the wonderfully intimate Philips Collection. "My mother was my first guide and dearest instructor and these were the treasures she laid before me. Together we shared favorites and discovered new wonders in the growing collections. She never asked but assumed, quite rightly, that I would be an artist. Lessons, materials and encouragement were always available to me. "After high-school I entered George Washington University in Washington, D.C. as a Fine Arts major and my studio classes were at nearby Corcoran School of Art. I loved it from day one and it's a great pleasure to know that it has prospered and is now the Corcoran College of Art, a degree issuing institution. "In 1953 I married Dennis Allegretti and moved to Chicago. Windy it is, and long on ice, snow and cold winters; but also home to the fabulous Art Institute of Chicago. We lived in Illinois for many years, raising our two sons and enjoying family life. Chicago has an exciting and diverse art scene supported by teaching institutions, galleries, museums and collectors and I had the opportunity to study with two fine artists: painter, Richard Florschime and sculptor, Abbot Patteson. "When we moved to a northern suburban town I became affiliated with a local art league and enjoyed the companionship of many artists, eventually teaching classes in pastel and printmaking. During this period I was affiliated with galleries in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, and Wellfleet on Cape Cod -- where I eventually opened my own gallery. "In 1991 we moved to Boston and in 1999 to Andover, Massachusetts. In addition to foreign travel, discovering the beauty and cultural treasures of New England has been an inspiration and stimulus to new directions in painting; life is good and it's wonderful to still be growing! "Painters never retire, never have nothing to do, never stop anticipating the next painting - surely we are the world's luckiest tribe!" SELECTED EXHIBITIONS:
