"I glory in this great creation surrounding us
and enjoy expressing my feelings about it in oil paints.

"I hope that those who see my paintings
will be compelled to have them
for their continued enjoyment."

Ralph Tiebout was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1920, was given his first set of oil paints at the age of 8, and has been painting on canvas ever since.

His formal education began at the Adelphi Academy in New York and continued there through high school. After graduation, he enrolled in Union College; an all-men college in Schenectady, New York.

Unfortunately, Union College didn't offer art courses. However, fortunately for him, he was invited to attend art classes at Skidmore, a college across the river. Attending classes at Skidmore was an enjoyable experience for Ralph. For any young man, as a matter of fact, because not only did he excel academically, but also because he was the only male student on an all-girl campus.

After earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Union College, Ralph moved on to Pratt Institute in New York City where he continued his art education in drawing, painting and lighting.

Some of Ralph's more noteworthy experiences in life, that has brought him to where he is today, include his service in the United States Coast Guard during World War II where he served on invasion landing craft at Normandy, Casablanca, and Iwo Jima.

After the war, inspired by his brother-in-law, "Scotty", also an artist, Ralph relocated to California where he found a job as a scenic artist at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. However, after a labor dispute causing he and his fellow artists to go on strike, he ventured away from the studios and the film industry and worked for several advertising agencies; eventually allowing him to own and operate a very successful art services business.

Desiring a more challenging artistic career, Ralph sold his thriving and prosperous enterprise and accepted a position as an Art Director for a large manufacturer of point of purchase promotions and markings. He supervised a superior staff of talented artists in design and production for clients like Coors, Anheuser-Busch, Pabst, Heinekens, Ligget & Meyers, Reynolds Tobacco and many others.

After his retirement in 1982, Ralph has shifted back to producing loving momentos to his wife, Margaret, and painting fine art western landscapes. He works in his studio daily and is especially thankful to Martha Saudek, noted Impressionist painter and western woman artist, for encouraging and gently teaching him to draw from life experiences, how to see shapes, work in a painterly fashion, and express feelings more than images.
