"When your Heart is Open, the Vision will Come..." A Native American proverb "At some precise moment I am guided by a sense of a design coming onto the paper or canvas, which is blank. I attribute this to the spirit of God."
_______________________________________________ Gail tells us more... "When I was six months of age my mother said that I would be sitting in my highchair and whatever object came into my hand I would make designs in the air; this before I could hold a spoon to feed myself. She was also convinced that I was clairvoyant, however fears of her own mother who became mentally ill thwarted the idea of inspiring those gifts in me. She merely wanted to avoid me having a similar fate. Little did she know that I had acquired that gene and I would succumb to the illness further down the road. "In elementary school I excelled in art, acting and writing. During the times when I should have been listening to the teacher, I would be drawing and that is how I really learned about art. It was unfortunate that my parents did not want me to excel in the arts but to conform to a traditional life. Conformity was never my strong point. In high school my grades were bad and I was forced to work for a general diploma instead of an academic one. This meant that I could not take art. So I excelled in drama and singing in the chorus instead. "I got a job in Lord and Taylor during a Christmas season where I met my husband. He encouraged me to paint and act and do whatever made me happy. We had a beautiful daughter but my husband's socio-phobic personality caused damage to us and we divorced. "A kind person let me use a basement room where my parents lived where I created many paintings. Some are my visions of songs by the group The Beatles i.e., 'Good Day Sunshine', 'The Fool on the Hill' and 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. "I have always preferred oil as my choice of paint and I tend to make my own mediums and sizing for the canvas. I use dry pigment also and for my drawings I have used markers in the past but I prefer colored pencil for the clarity they give. "In my nightmare of psychological changes after which time I was diagnosed and hospitalized with schizophrenia, it came to pass that they would become blessings in disguise. Because of the paintings I did before, during and after breakdowns I am able to present them in slide form to both in and out patients in psychiatric settings. They in turn become educated in understanding that they can overcome the stigma of mental illness. These people are inspired to create and come to the realization that they can heal themselves through the creative properties of art. "I gave a slide presentation to a school of adolescents that included slides of paintings about topics that would concern this population i.e., moral issues & philosophical issues surrounding romance. "Art is the most positive healer that I know of. What comes out on the paper is like the windows of the soul and each and every piece of art tells a story. It transcends our consciousness as we see inside ourselves. "My passion for art was ignited by Modigilani because I thought that the people he painted with the unseeing eyes saw, could see more with their hearts and that they were wise. In the sixties I went to MOMA where I saw the magnificent painting called 'Hide & Seek' by Pavel Tchelichew. It was then that I knew that I would be an artist. I never liked the word painter, why demean what you are. "Don't ever lose sight of who you are. Do the thing that you loved as a child and follow your dream. You are never too young or too old to nurture yourself." CURRENT & UPCOMING EVENTS: SELECTED EXHIBITIONS: Astoria, Queens, NY PUBLICATIONS: COLLECTORS: Back |
