"I have always been drawn to the human face - especically older people; their faces show their history, their life's experiences and I endeavor to narrate their stories in my work.

"As I began to understand my technique better, I started to branch out in other areas (reflective surfaces like glass, crystal and chrome provided ultra-realistic subject matter, as did the vibrant colors and shapes of flowers), but the visual reality of these objects was actually very abstract as I tried to recreate it on canvas.

"The result of all this has been an appreciation of both genres and I now paint very realistic images but from an abstract foundation.

"To me, all realism is a composite of many abstractions. This becomes clear when you view one of my canvases, be it a face or the handle bar of a motorcycle."

Denham tells you more...

"What I paint and why I paint is a result of my past and continuing experiences.

"I was a fun, sensitive, angular sort of kid with a bit of rascal thrown in. My interests were in music, not in art; that appeared much later. Any creative musings were shut down as I graduated from college...with the draft and war in SE Asia looming on the horizon I made a life-changing decision and opted for OCS in the US Marine Corps. Long story short, I survived 13 months as a combat commander in Vietnam and was ultimately released from active duty as a Captain in 1969.

"My post-war thinking prompted me to aggressively pursue 'living'. In the early 1970's I left Florida with 3 other guys on a 100 yr. old Danish schooner and headed into the Bermuda Triangle...through the Bahamas and into the Caribbean. I stayed in St. Thomas for one year then flew to Europe for a 4 month sojourn and ultimately wound up in Israel. While there I studied Hebrew, explored the land, the culture and its fascinating history. In the meantime, I lied my way into a chef's position at a French/Italian restaurant in Tel-Aviv... but that's another story.

"...back to the United States for a short period of time only to return to the sea. I flew to northern Scotland to rendezvous with a Marine buddy and we sailed his 30 ft. sloop from the British Isles to Portugal, West Africa, turned right and then headed across the Atlantic. In the northern latitudes (Irish Sea, English Channel, etc.) the gales were an ever-present threat, but the southern latitudes (with the tradewinds) were glorious. The actual crossing from Casablanca to St Maarten took 29 days.

"By the mid-70's I was wearying of a life at sea. Having some creative impulses that needed addressing, I packed my seabag and moved to northern New Mexico (Taos) to try my hand at painting.

"After several years of toil, experimentation and thought, things began to come together in ultra-realistic detail on canvas, and to my surprise a career began to develop. By 1979 I was exhibiting with the nation's leading super-realists (Chuck Close, Richard Estes, Duane Hansen, etc)..I was off and running."
