"As an artist, you simply can't afford to stop learning and experimenting.
"You learn something from every success and every failure.
"The trick is to go on challenging yourself."
_____________________________________________
In his singular approach to art, acclaimed Massachusetts artist Paul Crimi is unapologetic in his use of a wide range of styles, media and techniques to capture the moment as the mood and subject demand.
Painter, printmaker and sculptor, his prolific body of work encompasses realism, impressionism, abstraction and expressionism that has been charming, astounding and confounding art patrons for over 30 years.
Since studying at the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Paul has been widely exhibited throughout the east coast of the United States, including his own private studio in the historic Rockland, Massachusetts, Codman Building.
Inspiration comes from his travels throughout the United States and abroad as well as his personal ongoing study of modern masters from Matisse to Picasso to Hockney, and most significantly, from his devotion to his Catholic faith.
Passionately spiritual, Paul Crimi produces illuminating religious tributes that are widely collected by people of all faiths and have been published in religious periodicals nationwide.
Paul tells us more...
"The visual aspects of the world have become so defined that we have lost our zest for creative experiences. The artist has an obligation to instruct the public by making art as basic as television.
"My work, since 1996, gives witness to an inner reflection of a true spiritual conversion, outwardly manifested is a positive expression of the power in the revelation of Jesus Christ. When I'm creating a piece, whether it's a drawing, a painting, or a print, it's a way for me to contemplate my blessings. I characterize each and every one of my works as a visual prayer.
"As a Christian and an artist I agree with the words of William Blake, "The worship of God is honoring his gifts in other men, each according to his genius." All artists have come close to this kind of worship in their acknowledgement of the gifts of the masters. But it is only when one goes beyond himself as I have, in becoming part of the mystical body of Jesus Christ, that one really begins to see the real essence of truth.
"Reading the Bible, which for me has become a living dialogue with Christ who is the Word, has opened up new visions beyond conceptual projections. My life, as a result, has changed in a positive way; I now can see beauty in reality and am able to invent new expressions for my artwork.
"I openly share my religious experience with others in my work. Visual prayer, for me, grows naturally and is projected spontaneously from within, taking an original form. I want viewers to rejoice with me in the witnessing of the power and grace of God, which is in all of us.
"I create positive statements in my works as I invite viewers to return to an imaginative, child-like simplicity and to experience greater spiritual understanding and awareness. Responsive art must go beyond the technology of projected images and photo magic. It must come from deep within the soul of the artist to transcend time and space and to become'I am'.
"In search for my own meaning in the world, beyond the everyday necessity of making a living, I rejoice with Thomas Merton, dedicated Catholic author, who wrote,
"I found not unrest or rebellion but happiness and peace, and I rejoice in it, because blindly something in the middle of me clings to the one reality that remains accessible to me. This is the supreme reality of all... the love of GOD." |
